How To Measure Your Windows For Venetian Blinds
Ready to order new venetian blinds? Getting that picture-perfect finish is simple – with a little know-how! Our experts share how to measure your windows to get an accurate fit with ease.
Before you begin
Before you start measuring your windows for new venetian blinds, here are some important tips. You’ll need to:
- Use a steel measuring tape – keep it straight and tight. A laser measure can be very helpful.
- Always measure in millimetres (mm).
- Measure all your windows, even if they seem same width and height – you’ll be surprised at how they can differ!
- Measuring large windows? Get someone to help to, so the measuring tape stays level.
- Don’t worry about taking any deductions or allowances – we’ll do this for you.

Where should you start measuring?
Which part of your windows you need to measure depends on what type of venetian blinds you’re wanting. It’s either inside or outside mounted.
- Inside mounted venetian blinds – These lower inside your window frame. You need to measure there, inside your window frame.
- Outside mounted venetian blinds – These lower over your window frame. You need to measure from the outside edge of the left architrave to the right architrave.
Measuring for inside mounted venetian blinds
- Width – Measure across the window frame. Do this twice – at the top and the bottom of your window. Record the smallest figure.
- Drop – Measure down your window frame. Do this twice – on the left and right side of the window. Record the smallest figure.
We need the smallest figure to ensure your venetian blinds will fit inside the tightest part of the window.
Measuring for outside mounted venetian blinds
- Width – Measure across your window frame (from the outside edge of the left architrave to the right architrave). Do this twice – at the top and the bottom of your window. Record the smallest figure.
- Drop – Measure down your window frame (from the outside edge of the top architrave to the bottom architrave). Do this twice – on the left and right side of the window. Record the smallest figure.
Got it right?
As a final check:
- Make sure you’ve measured the correct window areas.
- Decide if you’d like your venetian blind cords to be on the left or right-hand side.
- Measure everything twice to ensure it’s right!
